Cry Purple

One woman's journey through homelessness, crack addiction, and prison, to blindness, motherhood, and happiness

Life with Ricky

And HChristine_and_Ricky_in_care Is Only Three

He walks Mommy to the restroom door at a store or at church, places her hand on the women’s door, and says, “There you go.” And he is only three.

He walks Mommy to a church pew, being careful to make sure no one else is seated there. He places her hand on the seat where she is to sit. And he is only three.

He waits at the bottom of the stairs to take Mommy’s hand to walk her to a waiting car. He places her hand on the door handle, saying, “There you go.” And he is only three.

He helps Mommy vacuum, saying, “Mommy, you missed some stuff. I’ll do it.” And he is only three.

He tells Mommy “Not that” when she’s searching for green beans and has corn Christine_and_Ricky_by_Christmas_treeinstead. “Let me help you,” he says, and gently places the green beans in her hand. Again he says, “There you go.” And he is only three.

He asks Mommy to go to the park, and Mommy has to say, “No, I’m sorry, but Mommy can’t see, so she can’t take you to the park. Mommy couldn’t keep you safe if you were to fall or if something else were to happen.”

He then takes Mommy’s hand and says, “Come, Mommy.”

He walks me outside, where he has set two patio chairs side by side, facing the porch. He says, “Sit down and put your feet on the stairs.” Then he says, “Roll your window down; it’s hot and sunny outside,” although it’s actually winter and bitter cold.

So I ask, “Where are we going, Ricky?”

He replies, “We’re going to the park. I’ll drive and will make sure you’re safe.”

And he is only three.

  1. Wow! Good kid! And good practice for being a nice person when he grows up.
